दो के हिंदी अर्थ
विशेषण, संख्यात्मक
- जो गिनती में एक से एक अधिक हो। तीन से एक कम। पद-दो-एक-एक से एक या दो अधिक। कुछ। जैसे-उनसे दो-एक बातें कर लो। दो चार-दो, तीन अथवा चार। कुछ। थोड़ा। जैसे-दो-चार दिन बाद आना। दो दिन की बहुत थोड़े समय का। हाल का। जैसे-यह तो अभी दो दिन की बात है। किसके दोसिर हैं ? = किसे फालतू सिर है ? कौन व्यर्थ अपने प्राण गवाना चाहता है। मुहा०-(आँखें) दो-चार होना = सामना होना। (किसी से) दो-चार होना = भेंट या मुलाकात होना। दो दो बातें करना संक्षिप्त परंतु स्पष्ट प्रश्नोत्तर करना। साफ-साफ कुछ बातें पूछना और कहना। दो नावों पर पैर रखना = दो आश्रमों या दो पक्षों का अवलंबन करना। ऐसी स्थिति में रहना कि जब जिधर चाहे, तब उधर मुड़ या हो सकें।

دو واؤ مجہول، بمعنی Two۔ فارسی میں واؤ معروف سے بولتے ہیں۔ ہمارے مشرقی علاقوں کی زبانوں مثلاً بھوج پوری میں، اور اودھی میں بھی واؤ معروف ہی بولتے ہیں۔’’دوئی‘‘ بمعنی Twoness میں بھی اردو فارسی دونوں میں واؤ معروف ہے۔ بعض لوگ مصر ہیں کہ فارسی میں لفظ ’’دو‘‘ محض نیم سبب ثقیل، یعنی ف مفتوح کے برابر بولا جاتا ہے۔ یہی لوگ اس پر بھی مصر ہیں کہ ترکیبی صورت میں اردو میں بھی اسے محض نیم سبب ثقیل بولنا چاہئے۔ یہ دونوں خیالات غلط ہیں۔ اردو فارسی دونوں میں اس لفظ کا اصل تلفظ بروزن یک سبب خفیف، یعنی بروزن فع بھی ہے۔ امیر خسرو ؎ زفکر دو جہاں آزاد باشم اگر تو ہم نشین بندہ باشی میر کا شعر ہے ؎ ہم بھی عالم فقر میں ہیں پر ہم سے جومانگے کوئی فقیر ایک سوال میں دو عالم دیں اتنے دل کے تنگ نہیں میر منشی محمدپادشاہ شاد، مؤلف ’’فرہنگ آنند راج‘‘ نے اپناقطعہ نقل کیا ہے جس میں ’’دو‘‘ کے دونوں تلفظ آگئے ہیں ؎ دو بود چار شد از تیغ شاہ مرکب و مرد بلے دو چار شود چوںبہ تیغ گشت دو چار بہ کتف ہر تن کاں تیغ برق سیر رسید ز تنگ توسن تازی بخاک کرد گذار یہ بات صحیح ہے کہ ’’دو‘‘ کو جب کسی فقرے یا ترکیب میں ڈالتے ہیں تو اردو فارسی دونوں ہی میں اس لفظ کواکثر بروزن ف مضموم، یعنی بروزن نصف سبب ثقیل ہی ادا کرتے ہیں۔ لیکن یہ قاعدۂ کلیہ نہیں۔ اردو فارسی میں بہت سے کلمے ایسے بھی ہیں جن میں’’دو‘‘ کو پورا ہی ادا کیا جاتا ہے، مثلاً: دوبدو[اردو، فارسی]، دوتہی [فارسی]، دوٹوک [اردو]، دودلہ [اردو،فارسی]، دوغلا[اردو]، دومونہی / دوموہی/ دومہی [اردو]
