تلمذ ’’شاگردی، شاگرد بنانا‘‘ کے معنی میں یہ لفظ، اورتفعیل کے وزن پر اسی قبیل کا دوسرا لفظ ’’تلمیذ‘‘ (بمعنی’’شاگرد‘‘)عربی معلوم ہوتے ہیں لیکن عربی میں نہیں ہیں۔ فارسی اردو کے کئی پرانے لغات میں یا ’’تلمذ‘‘ درج ہے یا ’’تلمیذ‘‘۔ دونوں یکجا کم نظرآتے ہیں۔ ’’منتخب‘‘ میں ’’تلمیذ‘‘ بکسر اول درج کرکے اس کی جمع ’’تلامذہ‘‘ بتائی گئی ہے۔ آگے لکھا ہے کہ عام خیالیہ ہے کہ یہ لفظ عربی فصیح نہیں ہے، لیکن حقیقت یہ ہے کہ یہ ’’تلمیذ‘‘ کا معرب ہے۔ ’’منتخب‘‘ میں یہ نہیں بتایا گیا ہے کہ ’’تِلمیذ‘‘ کو کس زبان سے معرب کیا گیا ہے۔ لیکن جیساکہ شیکسپیئر کے بیان سے معلوم ہوتا ہے، عبرانی میں کوئی لفظ ’’تلمیذ‘‘ ہوگا (غالباً بفتح اول) جس سے عربی’’تلمیذ‘‘ بکسراول بنالیا گیا۔ ’’دہخدا‘‘ نے دونوں درج کئے ہیں لیکن یہ بھی کہا ہے کہ اصل لفظ ’’تتلمذ‘‘ ہے اور ’’تلمذ‘‘ غلط العام۔ اس نے یہ بھی لکھا ہے کہ ایک رائے یہ بھی ہے کہ دونوں صحیح ہیں۔اس میں کوئی شک نہیں کہ عربی زبان میں اگر’’تلمیذ‘‘ (بکسر اول) ہے بھی تو ’’تلمذ‘‘ نہیں ہے۔ اردو فارسی والوں نے ’’تلمیذ‘‘ کی جمع بھی عربی کے طرز پر’’تلامذہ‘‘ بنا لی ہے۔ عربی میں، ظاہر ہے کہ ’’تلامذہ‘‘ بھی نہیں ہے۔ شیکسپیئر نے ’’تلمذ‘‘ نہیں درج کیا ہے لیکن ’’تلمیذ‘‘ درج کیا ہے، بمعنی ’’شاگرد بنانا‘‘ (یعنی جن معنی میں ہم ’’تلمذ‘‘ استعمال کرتے ہیں۔ ہمارے یہاں ’’تلمیذ‘‘ بمعنی شاگرد ہے)۔شیکسپیئر کا کہنا ہے کہ یہ لفظ عبرانی ہے اوروہاں اس کا مادہ ’’لمذ‘‘ ہے۔ ’’آنند راج‘‘ میں’’تلمذ‘‘ ہے، لیکن ’’تلمیذ‘‘ نہیں ہے۔ شیکسپیئر کی بات صحیح معلوم ہوتی ہے کہ عبرانی’’لمذ‘‘ سے ’’تلمیذ‘‘ (غالباً بفتح اول) مشتق ہوا، پھر عربی میں آکر وہی لفظ بکسر اول ہوگیا۔ قیاس چاہتا ہے کہ اس کے معنی ’’شاگرد‘‘ متعین کئے گئے ہوں۔ بعد میں ’’تلمیذ‘‘ کو عربی مصدر بروزن تفعیل قیاس کرکے کسی نے اسے باب تفعل میں ڈال کر ’’تلمذ‘‘ بنالیا اور اس کے معنی ’’شاگرد ہونا، شاگرد بنانا‘‘ قرار پائے۔ اردو کی موجودہ صورت یہ ہے کہ ’’تلمذ/تلمیذ/تلامذہ‘‘ سب درست ہیں لیکن عربی الفاظ ہونے کا گمان ان پرنہ کیا جائے۔ یہ بھی خیال رہے کہ اردو میں ’’تلمیذ/تلمذ/تلامذہ‘‘ سب میں اول مفتوح ہے۔
