گری اول مفتوح۔ اس لاحقے کے دو معنی ہیں: (۱) کوئی پیشہ یا کام کرنے کا عمل، مثلاً ’’میاں جی گری‘‘، بمعنی’’دو لوگوں کے درمیان ربط پیدا کرنے یا ان کے مابین کاروباری گفت وشنید کرنے کا پیشہ یاعمل‘‘۔ یا ’’سپہ گری‘‘، یعنی’’سپاہی کا پیشہ‘‘۔ یا ’’زرگری‘‘، بمعنی ’’سونے [سنار] کا پیشہ‘‘۔ یا ’’ایلچی گری‘‘، یعنی’’ایلچی کا کام یا پیشہ‘‘۔ میر نے اسی مفہوم میں ’’آدمی گری‘‘ لکھا ہے، دیوان چہارم ؎ شب سن کے شور میرا کچھ کی نہ بے دماغی اس کی گلی کے سگ نے کیا آدمی گری کی اور (۲) ’’بنانے کا کام‘‘، جیسے، ’’کوزہ گری، بادشاہ گری، شیشہ گری‘‘۔ دونوں مفہوم ’’گار‘‘ کے مخفف’’گر‘‘ کی مدد سے حاصل ہوتے ہیں۔ ’’گار‘‘ کا لاحقہ فاعلیت کے معنی دیتا ہے، جیسے، ’’آمرزگار[بمعنی’’بخشنے والا، یعنی خدا‘‘]، کرد گار[بمعنی’’کرنے والا، یعنی خدا‘‘]، ‘‘ وغیرہ۔ ’’گیر‘‘ اور’’گیری‘‘ جب لاحقے میں آئیں تو وہ بھی فاعلی معنی دیتے ہیں، جیسے’’کشتی گیر/کشتی گیری، باورچی گیر/باورچی گیری‘‘، وغیرہ۔
