آبادانی بمعنی ’’آباد ہونا، آبادی‘‘۔ یہ ’’آباداں‘‘ پر یاے فاعلی لگا کر حاصل ہوا ہے۔ فارسی میں بھی ہے۔’’آباداں‘‘ اور ’’آبادانی‘‘ اردو میں پہلے مستعمل تھے، لیکن معلوم نہیں کیوں اب یہ دونوں خوبصورت لفظ کچھ دن سے عام استعمال میں بہت کم نظر آتے ہیں۔یہ بات دلچسپ ہے کہ ’’آباد/آباداں/آبادانی‘‘ سب ٹھیک ہیں، لیکن ’’بہاراں‘‘ سے ’’بہارانی‘‘ اور ’’شاداں ‘‘ سے ’’ شادانی‘‘ صرف اصولاً درست ہیں ، عام بول چال میں نہیں ہیں۔علامہ شاداں بلگرامی کے شاگرد جو اپنے کو ’’شادانی‘‘لکھتے ہیں، اس میںیاے نسبتی ہے یعنی’’ شاداں سے منسلک‘‘، وغیرہ۔
