نگ اول مفتوح، بمعنی ’’سامان، یا کوئی شے جس کی گنتی ہوسکے‘‘۔ اس مفہوم میں ’’نگ‘‘ کسی لغت میں نہ ملا، حالانکہ اس معنی میں یہ لفظ ہرجگہ سنا گیا ہے۔ فارسی میں البتہ یہ لفظ نہیں، لیکن وہاں ’’نگین/نگینہ‘‘ اسی معنی میں ہے۔ دونوں کی اصل یقیناً ایک ہے، کیوں کہ ہمارا لفظ ’’نگ‘‘ پراکرت ’’نگو‘‘ (اول دوم مفتوح) اور پھر سنسکرت ’’نگہ‘‘ (اول دوم مفتوح، سوم ساکن)سے لیا گیا ہے۔ دیکھئے، ’’رقم‘‘، ’’عدد‘‘۔
