उर्दू में पांडुलिपि या किसी किताब के आरंभिक स्वरुप को मसौदा कहते हैं लेकिन इसका संबंध काले रंग से है, वो किस तरह है। अरबी में काले रंग को अस्वद कहते हैं क्योंकि लिखाई का काम स्याही से किया जाता था और स्याही शुरू में चराग के काजल से तैयार की जाती थी, इसलिए स्याही की मदद से अंकित करने के काम को लिखने के मायने में इस्तेमाल किया जाने लगा। शब्द मसौदा अर्थात 'काला किया हुआ' लेखन के लिए प्रयोग होने लगा।आम बोलचाल की भाषा में भी काग़ज़ काला करना कहा जाता है। लेकिन काला रंग, बुराई, अशुभ या शोक का प्रतीक माना जाता है जो अनगिनत मुहावरों के रूप में उर्दू साहित्य में मौजूद है। इसलिए प्राय: लिखने की स्याही के लिए प्राचीन फ़ारसी शब्द रोशनाई भी उर्दू में इस्तेमाल होता है: यक़ीन है कि अंधेरा फ़क़त अंधेरा है स्याही काली सही रोशनाई है फिर भी अशोक लाल
