مکے اور مدینے کے درمیان ایک موضع کا نام خُم ہے جہاں ایک تالاب ہے اس نسبت سے یہ غدیر خم کہلاتا ہے، جب رسول خدا صلعم حج سے فارغ ہو کر مدینے تشریف لے جا رہے تھے تو اس جگہ آپؐ نے قیام فرمایا اور ۱۸/ ذی الحجہ کو حضرت علی کے متعلق ارشاد فرمایا ’’مَن کُنْت مَولاہُ فُعَلِیُّ مَولاۂُ“ (جس کو میں محبوب ہوں علی بھی اس کو محبوب ہونا چاہیے)
