منش اول مفتوح، دوم مکسور، بمعنی ’’مزاج، طینت، خو‘‘، یہ لفظ پرانی فارسی کا ہے اور اب ہمارے یہاں صرف لاحقے کے طور پر برتا جاتا ہے، یعنی اکیلا ’’منش‘‘ آج کل کبھی نہیں بولا جاتا۔ عبد الرشید نے کئی پرانی مثالیں فراہم کی ہیں جن میں تنہا ’’منش‘‘ وارد ہوا ہے۔ لہٰذا صحیح صورت حال یہ ہے کہ پہلے’’منش‘‘ تنہا بھی بولتے تھے لیکن اب تنہا نظر نہیں آتا۔ ہرچند کہ لاحقے کی حیثیت سے اس کے پہلے کوئی لفظ آسکتا ہے جس کے ساتھ ’’منش‘‘ معنوی اعتبار سے درست ہو، لیکن اردو میں اس لاحقے کے ساتھ سب سے زیادہ مستعمل لفظ ’’صوفی منش‘‘ ہے، پھر’’آزاد منش‘‘۔ ان کے علاوہ حسب ذیل بھی مانوس و مستعمل ہیں: آوارہ منش، بیگانہ منش، فرشتہ منش، فقیرمنش، نیک منش، وغیرہ۔ بیدار بخت کہتے ہیں کہ اخترالایمان ہمیشہ ’’مَنَش‘‘ بفتحین بولتے تھے۔ بیداربخت مزید کہتے ہیں کہ انھوں نے بھی یہ لفظ یوں ہی سنا ہے۔ ایسی صورت میں بفتحین تلفظ کو دہلی اور مغربی یوپی سے مخصوص سمجھا جائے گا۔
