مچھر یہ لفظ ہمیشہ مذکر ہے، اس کا مؤنث کچھ نہیں۔ دہلی والے’’مچھڑ‘‘ بولتے ہیں۔ الہٰ آباد اور اس کے ذرا پورب کے خطے میں بھی’’مچھڑ‘‘ سنائی دیتا ہے۔ یہ ان علاقوں کا مقامی تلفظ ہے۔ زیادہ تر لوگ رائے مہملہ ہی سے بولتے ہیں۔ ڈاکٹر عبدالرشید دہلوی نے لکھا ہے کہ ’’مچھڑ‘‘ (مع رائے ہندی) دہلی میں نہیں سنا گیا۔ اس سلسے میں میرا تجربہ یہ ہے کہ ایک نہایت ثقہ دلی والے بزرگ کے سامنے میں نے یہی بات کہی کہ دلی والے’’مچھر‘‘ کو ’’مچھڑ‘‘ بولتے ہیں تو وہ آشفتہ ہوکر بولے کہ ہرگز نہیں۔ لیکن چند ہی منٹ بعد ان صاحب نے از خود ’’مچھڑ‘‘ کہا۔ یعنی غیر شعوری طور پر وہ مع رائے ہندی ہی بولتے تھے، لیکن شعوری طور پر اس سے منکر تھے۔ بیدار بخت بھی دلی والے ہیں، ان کا کہنا ہے کہ دلی والے ’’مچھر‘‘ اور ’’مچھڑ‘‘ (یعنی مع رائے ہندی) دونوں طرح بولتے ہیں۔ رائے مہملہ اور رائے ہندی کا یہ تبادل اور بھی لفظوں میں نظرآتا ہے۔ مثلاً مشرقی علاقوں میں ’’کھرکی‘‘ مع رائے مہملہ بولتے ہیں، لیکن دوسرے علاقوں میں عام تلفظ ’’کھڑکی‘‘ مع رائے ہندی ہے۔ ایسی مثالیں اور بھی ہیں، مثلاً ’’بڑی‘‘ (دال کی بنی ہوئی ایک طرح کی چیز جسے کھاتے ہیں) کو پورب میں عموماً ’’بری‘‘ مع رائے مہملہ کہا جاتا ہے۔ دیکھئے، ’’تانیث سے عاری نام، جانوروں کے‘‘۔
