خچر وہ جانور جس کی ماں یا باپ میں سے ایک گھوڑے کی نسل کا ہو اور ایک گدھے کی نسل کا، عموماً ماں مادۂ خر ہوتی ہے۔ خچر ہمیشہ نر لیکن قوت تولید سے عاری ہوتا ہے۔ یہ لفظ عام طور پر مذکربولاجاتا ہے، لیکن مؤنث بھی رائج ہے۔ کسی پرانے لغت میں مؤنث درج نہیں، لیکن مخمس شہر آشوب میں سودا کا شعر ہے ؎ ہوا پہ جیتی ہے بیلوں کی اور بھس پہ برات جوخچریں ہیں انھوں نے پیا ہے آب حیات ’’اردو لغت، تاریخی اصول پر‘‘ میں۳۹۸۱ کی ایک تصنیف سے فقرہ درج ہے: خچریں راستے میں مر گئیں۔ لطف یہ ہے کہ اس کا مؤنث ’’خچری‘‘ بھی موجود ہے۔ یہ لفظ بھی کسی پرانے لغت میں نہیں۔ ’’اردو لغت، تاریخی اصول پر‘‘ میں البتہ ہے۔ داستان امیر حمزہ میں جگہ جگہ ملتا ہے۔ دیکھئے، ’’تانیث سے عاری نام، جانوروں کے‘‘۔
