دانش مند ’’دانش مند‘‘ بہت پرانا لفظ ہے، بمعنی’’ عقل مند‘‘۔ شیخ سعدی کا شعر ہے (گلستان) ؎ چارپائے برو کتابے چند نہ محقق بود نہ دانش مند ’’دانشور‘‘ کے بھی یہی معنی تھے، لیکن یہ لفظ بہت پرانا نہیں ہے۔ ’’فرہنگ آصفیہ‘‘ میں ’’دانشور‘‘ درج نہیں، ’’نوراللغات‘‘ میں ’’دانشور‘‘بمعنی ’’دانشمند‘‘ ملتا ہے۔ زمانۂ حال میں انگریزی لفظ Intellectual کے معنی میں’’دانش ور‘‘ بولتے ہیں۔
