افسانوی ’’افسانوی‘‘ کے معنی ہیں، ’’افسانے کی طرح کا تجسس انگیز، رومانی اور دلچسپ‘‘۔ مثلاً کسی کی شخصیت کو ’’افسانوی‘‘ کہا جاتا ہے، یعنی ایساآدمی جس کی طرح کا شخص [یقین نہ آنے والے] افسانوں میں ملتا ہو، یعنی جس میں کچھ پراسراریت ہو اور کشش ہو۔ پھر’’افسانوی‘‘ کے معنی ہیں، ’’غیرحقیقی‘‘۔ اس لفظ کے تیسرے معنی ہیں، ’’بہت مشہور، جسے انگریزی میں Legendary کہا جائے‘‘۔ لیکن آج کل کچھ لوگ ’’افسانوں کا مجموعہ‘‘ کے معنی میں’’افسانوی مجموعہ‘‘ لکھنے اور بولنے لگے ہیں لیکن مندرجہ بالامعنی کی روشنی میں صاف ظاہر ہے کہ افسانوں کے مجموعے کو’’افسانوی‘‘ کہنا مضحکہ خیز ہے۔ ’’افسانوی مجموعہ‘‘ کی جگہ سیدھا سیدھا ’’افسانوں کا مجموعہ‘‘ کہنا چاہئے۔
