- بلحاظِ اصوات اُردو حروفِ تہجی کا اکتیسواں ، عربی کا پندرھواں اِور فارسی کا اٹھارواں حرف. یہ حرفِ صحیح (مصمتّہ) ہے ۔ تلفّظ ضاد ہے. علمِ تجوید کی رُو سے اس کا مخرج حافۂ لسان یعنی زبان کا بغلی کنارہ جو حلق کی طرف ہے اور اِس کے دائیں یا بائیں اور اوپر کی ڈاڑھوں کی جڑیں۔ اس کا ٹھیک تلفّظ اہلِ عرب ہی کرتے ہیں ، اُردو والے دُواد یا ضواد تلفّظ کرتے ہیں۔ اُردو میں اس کی آواز ”ز“ سے مشابہ ہے۔ یہ کلمے کے شروع میں بھی آتا ہے اور درمیان یا آخر میں بھی ، جیسے ضابطہ ، مضر ، فیض. اسے ضادِ معجمہ یا ضاد منقوطہ بھی کہتے ہیں ، حسابِ جُمل میں اس کے آٹھ سو عدد فرض کیے گئے ہیں۔ یہ عربی میں شمسی حرف ہے۔ اس لیے اس سے پہلے ”ال“ معرفہ آئے تو لامِ غیر ملفوظ ہو گا اور ض مشوّد پڑھا جائے گا. یہ خاص عربی زبان کا حرف ہے اور فارسی یا اُردو کے صرف ان لفظوں میں آتا ہے جو عربی سے لیے گئے ہیں ۔
