تابع مہمل کلام میں زور یا خوبصورتی پیدا کرنے کی غرض سے بہت سے الفاظ جوڑے کی شکل میں بولے جاتے ہیں۔ ان جوڑوں کی حیثیت مستقل فقرے کی ہوتی ہے اورا ن میں تبدیلی نہیں کرسکتے۔ایسے جوڑوں میں پہلا لفظ عموماً بامعنی ہوتا ہے۔ اگر دوسرا لفظ بھی با معنی ہو تو اسے’’تابع موضوع‘‘ کہتے ہیں (’’دیکھئے تابع موضوع‘‘)۔اوراگر دوسرا لفظ بے معنی ہو تو اسے’’ تابع مہمل ‘‘ کہتے ہیں۔ ایسے جوڑے کا دوسرا لفظ اکیلا کبھی نہیں بولا جاتا۔ مثلاً: آن بان، بچا کھچا، پانی وانی، توبہ تلا، جھاڑ جھنکاڑ، ردی سدی، شادی وادی، غل غپاڑا، کپڑا وپڑا، گول مال، لوٹ کھسوٹ، ماردھاڑ دیکھئے، ’’تابع موضوع‘‘، دیکھئے، ’’سابق مہمل‘‘۔
