سانس اس لفظ کو مؤنث اور مذکر دونوں طرح سنا گیا ہے۔ یہ خیال غلط ہے کہ دہلی والے اسے مذکر بولتے ہیں اور لکھنؤ والے مونث۔ حقیقت یہ ہے کہ دونوں جگہ یہ لفظ زبانوں پر دونوں طرح رواں ہے ؎ آہ جاتی تھی آسماں پہ کبھی سانس بھی اب تو لی نہیں جاتی (جلال) ٹھنڈی ٹھنڈی جو کوئی سانس ہے آتی جاتی دل میں ہے آگ مرے اور لگاتی جاتی (بہادر شاہ ظفر) بادشاہ میں کچھ سانس باقی تھے۔ (فقرہ، مولوی ذکاء اللہ دہلوی) دم چڑھ گیا ہے سانس اکھڑتی ہے دم بدم صدمے سے بیٹھا جاتا ہے دل کیا اٹھیں قدم (میر انیس) صاحب ’’آصفیہ‘‘ نے دلچسپ بات لکھی ہے کہ اگرچہ شعرا نے اس لفظ کو مؤنث باندھا ہے لیکن یہ زبانوں پرمذکر ہے۔ انھیں سوچنا چاہئے تھا کہ اگر تمام زبانوں پر مذکر ہوتا تو پھر شعرا اسے مؤنث کیوں باندھتے؟ اصل صورت یہ ہے کہ کچھ لوگ ’’سانس‘‘ کو مذکر بولتے ہیں، لیکن زیادہ تر لوگ مؤنث بولتے ہیں۔ لیکن ایسے لوگ بھی ہیں جو مجرد ’’سانس‘‘ کو مؤنث کہیں گے، لیکن ’’سانس اکھڑ گیا، سانس پھول گیا‘‘ وغیرہ بھی بول دیں گے۔ بہرحال، چونکہ بولنے والوں کی اکثریت ’’سانس‘‘ کی تانیث کے حق میں ہے۔ لہٰذا اسے مؤنث کہنا بہتر ہوگا۔
