صاحب دیوان بہ اضافت، بمعنی’’دیوان [یعنی دفتر] کامالک‘‘۔ فارسی میں’’وزیر‘‘ کے معنی میں مستعمل ہے، طاہر وحید ؎ صاحب دیواں علی ابن ابی طالب کہ ہست خلق عالم راز نامش اسم اعظم برزباں اردو میں ان معنی میں صرف ’’دیوان‘‘ ہے، اور یہ لفظ بعض ہندوستانی ریاستوں کے وزیراول کے لئے مخصوص تھا۔’’صاحب دیوان‘‘ کے معنی ہمارے یہاں اس شاعر کو کہتے ہیں جس نے اپنے اشعار کا مجموعہ حروف تہجی کی ترتیب سے جمع کیا ہو اور اسے’’دیوان‘‘ کا نام دیا ہو۔ آغا جان عیش نے غالب کی ہجو میں کہا تھا ؎ ڈیڑھ جز پر بھی تو ہے مطلع و مقطع غائب غالب آسان نہیں صاحب دیواں ہونا
