جیب اول مفتوح، بمعنی’’گریبان‘‘، یہ مذکر ہے۔ یائے مجہول کے ساتھ ’’جیب‘‘ بمعنی Pocket، یہ مؤنث ہے۔ دونوں کی اصل ایک ہی ہے۔’’جیب‘‘ مع اول مفتوح کی جنس کے بارے میں شک رہا ہے۔ عام لغات میں ایسی سند نہیں ملتی جس سے اس کی جنس ثابت ہوسکے۔غالب کا شعر ہے ؎ چپک رہا ہے بدن پر لہو سے پیراہن ہمارے جیب کو اب حاجت رفو کیا ہے اس شعر کو ’’جیب‘‘ بمعنی گریبان کی تذکیر کے سند ماننے میں بعض کو تامل ہے، کہ غالب نے شاید ’’ہماری جیب‘‘ لکھا ہو، کیونکہ پرانے زمانے کی تحریر میں یائے معروف اور مجہول کا فرق نہیں کرتے تھے۔ بعض مطبوعہ نسخوں میں’’ہماری جیب‘‘ملتا بھی ہے۔ بہرحال، جیب مع اول مفتوح بمعنی ’’گریبان‘‘ کی تذکیر کے لئے میر کی سند ہے ، دیوان اول ؎ ہے دامن گلچین چمن جیب ہمارا دنیا میں رہے دیدۂ خونبار ہمیشہ حسب ذیل شعر میر کے دیوان دوم کا ہے ؎ جب سے ناموس جنوں گردن بندھا ہے تب سے میر جیب جاں وابستۂ زنجیر تا داماں ہوا
