عید الضحیٰ ’’عید الاضحی‘‘ یا ’’بقرعید‘‘ کے معنی میں یہ لفظ ایک زمانے میں تحریر میں مستعمل ہوگیا تھا۔ ’’ضحیٰ‘‘ کے معنی ’’سورج، دھوپ، سورج کی کرن‘‘ وغیرہ ہیں۔ ایک خاص حالت میں یہ لفظ ’’قربانی‘‘ کے معنی بھی دیتا ہے، لیکن عمومی طورپر’’ضحی‘‘ بمعنی’’قربانی‘‘ درست نہیں۔ ’’قربانی، یا قربانی کا جانور‘‘ کے معنی میں’’اضحی‘‘ ہے۔ لہٰذا ’’بقرعید ‘‘ کاعربی نام ’’عید الاضحی‘‘ ہے، ’’عیدالضحیٰ‘‘ نہیں۔ چونکہ ’’عید الضحیٰ‘‘ بول چال میں تقریباً بالکل ہی نہیں ہے، صرف تحریری لفظ ہے، اور وہ بھی شاذ، لہٰذا اسے آسانی سے ترک، اور’’عید الاضحی‘‘ کو قائم رکھا جا سکتا ہے۔
