عدد جس طرح ’’رقم‘‘ اور’’نگ‘‘ کو مطلق گنتی کے معنی میں استعمال کرتے ہیں، اسی طرح’’عدد‘‘ کو بھی جواہرات یا سامان کی گنتی کے بھی مفہوم میں استعمال کرتے ہیں، یعنی’’چارعدد کی انگوٹھی‘‘ کے معنی ہوں گے، ’’انگوٹھی جس میں چارنگ لگے ہوں‘‘۔ میر (دیوان اول) ؎ اشک تر قطرۂ خوں لخت جگر پارۂ دل ایک سے ایک عدد آنکھ سے بہ کر نکلا یعنی لطف کی بات یہ ہے کہ ’’نگ‘‘ کے معنی ہیں، ’’قیمتی پتھر‘‘، اور اسے’’عدد‘‘ کے معنی میں استعمال کرتے ہیں (مثلاً ’’سامان چار نگ ہے‘‘)، اور’’عدد‘‘ کے معنی ہیں محض گنتی (Number) اور اسے قیمتی پتھر کے معنی میں بھی استعمال کرتے ہیں۔ دیکھئے، ’’رقم‘‘، ’’نگ‘‘۔
