آب سیاہ اردو میں اس فقرے کے ایک معنی’’شراب‘‘ بھی ہیں۔ فارسی میں یہ معنی نہیں ہیں۔ اثر لکھنوی نے لکھا ہے کہ’’آب سیاہ‘‘ اردو میں نہیں ہے، ’’کالا پانی‘‘ بمعنی’’شراب‘‘ کی فارسی ہے۔ لیکن حقیقت یہ ہے کہ’’آب سیاہ‘‘ بمعنی’’شراب‘‘ فارسی میں ہے ہی نہیں۔ لہٰذا یہ ترکیب اہل اردو نے بنائی ہے اور صرف اردو ہے۔ میر کا شعر ہے (مثنوی’’اعجازعشق‘‘)؎ مجھے مست آب سیہ دے کے کر چلوں جوں قلم پھرمیں مطلب اپر فارسی میں’’آب سیاہ‘‘ کے ایک معنی’’سمندر‘‘ ہیں۔ اردو میں بھی یہ معنی کبھی رائج تھے، لیکن اب مستعمل نہیں۔ انگریزوں کے زمانے میں ہندوستانی لوگوں کے جزائر انڈمان نکوبار میں قید، یا جلا وطن کئے جانے کو’’کالا پانی ہونا‘‘ بولتے تھے۔ یہ فقرہ اور یہ معنی بھی اب نہیں ہیں۔
